For most of Tulum's tourism history, "flying to Tulum" meant flying to Cancún and enduring a two-hour transfer down Highway 307. That changed with the opening of Tulum International Airport — officially Aeropuerto Internacional Felipe Carrillo Puerto, code TQO — which put international arrivals roughly twenty minutes from town. This guide covers what actually matters when you land: how the airport works, every way to reach your hotel, honest costs, and the mistakes first-timers make. We write it as a family owning a unit at Copal Tulum in Aldea Zamá, about 20 minutes from the runway, and we have made this run many times.
Where the airport actually is
TQO sits southwest of Tulum, off Highway 307 in the direction of Felipe Carrillo Puerto — roughly 25 to 35 minutes' drive from most Tulum hotels depending on your zone and traffic. From the terminal to Aldea Zamá, our neighborhood, plan on about 20 to 25 minutes; the beach hotel zone runs slightly longer because of the coast road. This proximity is the airport's entire value proposition: what used to be a 90-to-120-minute transfer from Cancún became a quick hop.
The airport is modern and, by Cancún standards, blissfully small — a single passenger terminal, short walking distances, and immigration lines that move. On normal days you can be curbside within 30 to 45 minutes of wheels-down, faster with only carry-on luggage.
Who flies here (and when Cancún still wins)
Routes have grown steadily since opening: Mexican carriers connect Mexico City, Guadalajara, Monterrey and other domestic hubs, while several major US airlines have added nonstops from their hub cities, with seasonal variation. Schedules change often at a young airport, so treat any route list — including ours — as a snapshot and verify current service from your city before assuming.
The honest comparison: Cancún (CUN) still offers far more routes, more daily frequencies and often cheaper fares, especially from Europe and smaller US cities. Our rule of thumb — if TQO has a nonstop from your city at a reasonable fare, take it and bank the two saved transfer hours; if flying TQO requires an awkward connection or a big premium, CUN plus a private transfer remains a perfectly good arrival (we cover that in our Cancún-to-Tulum guide).
Getting from TQO to your hotel: every option
Pre-booked private transfer: the smoothest option, especially after a long flight — a driver with your name at arrivals, fixed price agreed in advance, typically in the $45–$90 USD range per vehicle to Tulum hotels depending on zone and vehicle size. Your hotel can arrange this; we do it for Copal guests routinely.
Airport taxi counters: official taxis sell fixed-rate rides at desks inside the terminal — convenient with no advance planning, generally priced above pre-booked transfers. Confirm the total price and your exact hotel zone before paying. Rental cars: the major agencies operate at the airport; a car makes sense if your trip includes multiple cenotes, Cobá or Bacalar, less so if you plan to stay local. ADO buses: comfortable coaches connect the airport with Tulum centro and other Riviera destinations at backpacker prices, with the trade-off of terminal-to-hotel logistics on arrival. And the Tren Maya station adjacent to the airport connects to Playa del Carmen, Cancún airport and beyond — more on that in our dedicated Maya Train guide.
Arrival tips from locals
Download offline maps before you fly; signal along 307 is patchy. Have your hotel's name and neighborhood written down — "Copal Tulum, Avenida Kukulcán, Aldea Zamá" gets our guests door-to-door without a single wrong turn. Withdraw pesos at the airport ATM or bring some: small purchases and tips run smoother in cash. If you land after dark, a pre-booked transfer beats improvising at the counters. And immigration gives you a QR-coded or stamped entry — photograph it; you may be asked for it on departure.
Departing: TQO's small size cuts it both ways — security is quick, but food and shopping options are limited, so eat before you leave your hotel. Two hours before an international flight is comfortable here. Traffic on the 307 stretch toward the airport is rarely an issue, but build in a small buffer on holiday weekends, when the whole Riviera moves at once.
Landing at TQO, staying in Aldea Zamá
The airport quietly changed the math on where to stay. When arrival meant two hours from Cancún, shaving ten minutes off the final leg meant little. Now that the airport sits twenty minutes out, Aldea Zamá — positioned between the airport approach, the town and the beach — became the most connected base in Tulum: 20–25 minutes from your gate to your suite. Guests at Copal Tulum regularly message us from baggage claim and are ordering a welcome drink at the Gastro & Bar before the hour is up.
If you are still choosing your base, our Where to Stay in Tulum guide compares all three zones honestly. And whenever your flights are booked, send us the arrival details with your inquiry — we will line up the transfer and have the room ready.
Frequently asked questions
How far is Tulum airport from the hotel zone?
Roughly 25–40 minutes depending on your hotel's location: about 20–25 minutes to Aldea Zamá and the town center, slightly longer to the beach hotel zone via the coast road.
How much is a transfer from Tulum airport to a hotel?
Pre-booked private transfers typically run $45–$90 USD per vehicle depending on zone and vehicle size. Airport taxi counters charge fixed rates that are usually somewhat higher than pre-booked services.
Is it better to fly into Tulum or Cancún?
If TQO has a reasonable nonstop from your city, fly Tulum and save roughly two hours of transfer. Cancún still wins on route variety and often on fares — pair it with a private transfer and it remains a solid option.
Does the Tren Maya stop at Tulum airport?
Yes — the Tulum station sits adjacent to the airport, with connections toward Playa del Carmen, Cancún airport and the wider Yucatán network. See our dedicated Maya Train guide for details.
Can Copal Tulum arrange my airport transfer?
Yes. Include your flight details in your booking inquiry and we will coordinate a private transfer to the property — about 20–25 minutes door to door.
